Here at Amethyst Education we love to catch up with our teachers to see how they're getting on in their roles. We recently caught up with ECT Declan, who qualified in July 2021.

What year group / subject do you teach?

I Teach Year 7-10 Geography

What made you want to get in to teaching?

To help disadvantaged young people get an education.

Describe your teaching style in 3 words

Strict, Energetic & lively

What would you say is the most challenging part of being a teacher?

Staying on top of the workload and being organised.

What 3 tips would you give to someone about to start their teacher training?

Learn to take criticism quickly, get organised and use your planner everyday and have downtime. There has to be a point where you stop working because you could stop working because you could work all night. You’re no good to anyone if you are tired and not with it.

What part of your job do you enjoy most?

When the kids are fully engaged in your lesson and you can see it by the atmosphere in the classroom.

Why would you recommend someone to get into teaching?

No day is the same and the weeks fly by meaning the holidays come round quick! (wink emoji)!

What advice would you give to to an ECT in their first teaching role?

Stick with it. It is extremely overwhelming at first but it starts to settle. Ask plenty of questions and understand everyone is stress in the first few weeks back after summer, its no reflection on you or your teaching.

How would you like to see your teaching career develop?

I want to take on a pastoral role as soon as I feel the time is right and move into that aspect of school life.

How did Amethyst help find the right role for you?

Katy got me an interview at a school I was already eyeing up. The interview happened very quickly and so far I am absolutely loving it. Fingers crossed it stays that way.
