Congratulations, you made it to the first half term of the school year! Let's face it, it's always a bit of a struggle to get back into the swing of things after the Summer holidays, not to mention the first 'normal' term since the pandemic.
Your priority as a teacher is to put your pupils first and it's so easy to forget about your own mental health and wellbeing. So this half term make the most of having some time to reflect, recharge and refresh with our Amethyst Education top tips...
Take time to reflect
Very rarely do teachers get a spare moment during term time to actually take a moment to have a good think about how things are going. Use this time for reflection. Block some time out in your week and put your phone on 'do not disturb' to avoid any distractions. Think about what you've enjoyed about the term so far and if there's anything that you feel could have gone better or needs to change in the second half of the term. If you find it easier then grab a note pad and write down your thoughts - it can make such a difference seeing your thoughts written down on paper. If there's something that's been bothering you in your role think about how you can take action when you return to school.
Take time to switch off
In a 2020 survey by Education Support, 62% of education staff described themselves as being stressed. You're no good to anyone if you're finding yourself regularly unhappy or overwhelmed. Take this week to totally switch off, and if that means doing absolutely nothing other than binging the latest Netflix series, then do it. As teachers it's natural to feel like you need to constantly be productive, but see taking time out to totally switch off as a way to help increase your productivity going forward. Also, if you can't relax in half terms then when can you?!
Take time just for you
Each morning when you wake up write down 3 things that you are going to do that day that are JUST FOR YOU. Ever wish you had the time to read the book that's been sitting on the side for months? Or maybe you just want to drink your first coffee of the day while it's actually still hot?! Or maybe you fancy trying out a new hobby? It doesn't matter how big or small these things may be, the fact is taking just a little time out for yourself each day (could literally be 10 minutes) will do you the world of good. There's nothing to say that this morning ritual is just for half terms or holidays either, try sticking with it when school starts back up and you could have yourself a new wellbeing ritual.
